A stroke is similar to a heart attack but the blood flow has been obstructed to the brain rather than the heart. Checking for symptoms of a stroke can be done by using the acronym F.A.S.T.

F: Facial Droop

Ask the patient to smile and check for a facial droop on one side.

A: Arms

Ask the patient to raise both arms and check to see if the arm lists to the drooping side.

S: Slurred Speech

Ask the patient to repeat a sentence back to you and check for slurred speech.

T: Time

Ask the patient when they started experiencing symptoms and note this for EMS.

It is important to get medical treatment quickly to help them regain as much quality of life as possible.
